 What is Reproductive Health?

Reproductive health means that the reproductive organs (like ovaries, testes, uterus, etc.) are:

  • Healthy
  • Working properly
  • But it is not only about the body.

👉 According to World Health Organization (WHO):

Reproductive health means complete well-being, including:

  • Physical health → body is normal and healthy
  • Emotional health → feelings and mental state are balanced
  • Behavioural health → responsible actions
  • Social health → good relationships and respect in society

✔ So, a reproductively healthy person is:

  • Physically normal
  • Emotionally stable
  • Behaves responsibly
  • Has healthy relationships

🔹 What is a Reproductively Healthy Society?

A society is called reproductively healthy when:

  • People have normal reproductive organs
  • People behave responsibly in sex-related matters
  • There is mutual respect and awareness
  • No harmful practices or misuse

🔹 Why is Reproductive Health Important?

It is important because:

  • Prevents diseases (like infections)
  • Helps in safe pregnancy and childbirth
  • Avoids unwanted pregnancies
  • Promotes awareness and good behaviour
  • Builds a healthy society     
India’s Role (Important for Exams)
India was one of the first countries to take action on reproductive health.

👉 Family Planning Programme

Started in 1951

Aim:

  • Control population
  • Improve reproductive health
  • Regularly checked and improved over time
✔ These programs include:

  • Awareness campaigns
  • Birth control methods
  • Health services
 Awareness programs (RCH Programme)
Government runs programs like RCH (Reproductive and Child Health Care)

Aim:
  • Teach people about reproduction
  • Provide medical help
  • Make society healthy
📚 Role of education
Information is spread through:
  • TV, radio, newspapers
  • Teachers, parents, and friends
  • Schools should teach sex education so students:
  • Don’t believe myths
  • Understand body changes during adolescence
  • Learn safe and hygienic practices

It helps people:
  • Understand reproductive organs
  • Stay safe from STDs (sexually transmitted diseases)
  • Live a healthy life

 Amniocentesis (important point)
It is a test done during pregnancy
A small amount of amniotic fluid around the baby is taken
It helps detect genetic disorders like:
  • Down syndrome
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Haemoplilia
 But:
It was misused to find baby’s sex
This led to female foeticide
So, sex determination is legally banned

Scientists are working to:
  • Improve reproductive health methods
  • Develop new contraceptives (birth control)
